On October 14th, Lawrence, Kansas transformed into a hub of adrenaline, grit, and gravel as it hosted the 2023 Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR). Offering a thrilling blend of gravel, mud, and challenging terrains, this unique cycling experience promises—and delivers—unparalleled excitement and challenge.
The Course:
BWR KS proudly claims its title as America’s finest gravel/unroad course, and it’s not hard to see why. The 2023 route was reimagined, ensuring that riders encounter the breathtaking rolling hills that characterized the 2022 edition. The landscape paints a vivid picture: a rhapsody of ups and downs, weaving through rustic farmlands and mimicking the ruggedness of the Ardennes hills.
With hardly any straight paths to coast on and very few paved roads, riders brace for an authentic off-road experience. The omnipresent wind adds another layer of challenge, ensuring that riders can’t simply huddle in groups to break its force—they are, for much of the journey, battling it solo.
Distances:
To cater to various skill levels and endurance capacities, the BWR offers:
- The Waffle: A robust 120-mile course.
- The Wafer: An intermediate 80-mile course.
- The Wanna: A more accessible 30-mile course.
