Recently, I had the pleasure of working on a food photo shoot for DoorDash, featuring dishes from one of Tulsa’s beloved local eateries: Piehole Pizzeria. Nestled on Cherry Street (15th Street, between Harvard and Lewis), Piehole Pizzeria is known for its authentic New York-style pizza, a taste locals and visitors alike can’t seem to get enough of.
The Scene: Cherry Street’s Culinary Charm
Cherry Street, with its vibrant mix of restaurants, shops, and a unique neighborhood feel, provided the perfect backdrop for this project. Piehole Pizzeria fits right into this eclectic area, combining the charm of a local shop with big-city flavor. The goal of the shoot was to capture the essence of what makes Piehole Pizzeria a staple of the community: its bold flavors, mouth-watering pizzas, and that inviting, casual atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
Behind the Lens: Photographing Pizza (and more) in All Its Glory
Capturing food—especially pizza—presents some unique challenges. You want the cheese to look melty, the crust crispy, and the toppings fresh and vibrant. But it’s more than just snapping a picture; it’s about telling a story. The smell of freshly baked dough, the texture of bubbling cheese, and the vibrant colors of the toppings all needed to come through in each shot.
From their classic cheese slice to the heartier specialty pies, the shoot showcased a variety of their offerings. One of my personal favorites was capturing the moment right when a slice was lifted, strings of gooey cheese trailing behind, evoking that familiar anticipation of taking the first bite.
Lighting & Composition: The Art of Pizza Photography
To make the pizza the star of the show, I worked with studio light to create a natural look that emphasizes the textures and colors. Positioning the pizza at just the right angle to highlight its layers, I also played with different compositions to capture the spirit of a casual dining experience. Close-up shots of the toppings, and wide shots featuring entire pies all helped to illustrate the diverse range of offerings.

As the shoot wrapped up, I couldn’t help but feel excited about how these photos will represent Piehole Pizzeria on DoorDash. They’ve been a long-time favorite in the Tulsa community, and now, thanks to DoorDash, even more people will get to experience their delicious New York-style pizza.
