I recently had the opportunity to present at Bedford’s Camera and Video in Tulsa, Oklahoma as part of their Capture T-town event series. As an experienced podcaster and audio engineer, I outlined critical factors to consider when launching a new podcast, such as clearly defining your niche and target demographic. Thoroughly researching your audience and tracking listener data over time also helps create content that truly resonates with fans.

On the technical side, I explored essential gear for quality recordings, notably discussing microphone types like omnidirectional versus unidirectional and placement techniques. I suggested quality microphone options at or above $100 that still capture clean audio. Additional equipment like pop filters and audio interfaces were covered as well.

An informative portion of the talk involved audio editing software and the vital processes of leveling volumes and trimming dead space to polish episodes. I gave a hands-on demo of normalizing audio tracks to achieve consistent loudness for listeners and walked through creating intro/outro music beds and sound effects. I also dove a bit into hosting and distribution with platforms like Buzzsprout, which provide AI tools and analytics on top of the standard hosting services. These services help me be more efficient with my time, minimizing administrative work.

Attendees had opportunities to ask me questions on issues like computer connectivity, legal considerations, and contingency planning for remote interviews. My responses reflected extensive real-world content production experience, including technical details while remaining engaging for those new to the industry and podcasting.

The presentation (link) included invaluable direction for navigating common podcast hurdles. Aspiring podcasters gathered tremendous knowledge on how to professionally execute their shows and grow their audiences.
